Smyrna’s history begins in the 1800s as an agricultural community made up of many large farms and plantations. One of the more noted plantations is the Sam Davis Home, now a historic landmark, which has been designated as a state historical site. The 200-acre estate is now governed by a Board of Regents which is a group of concerned citizens who are dedicated to preserving this nineteenth century working plantation. It is open for tours though the nine rooms of the main house and other buildings, beginning with a documentary video about the life of Sam Davis and a visit through the museum. One other historic event of note occurred in the 1960s, when Percy Priest Lake was created by nearby Smyrna. With Congressional approval, the Corp of Engineers began acquiring land in the area for the lake. Actual clearing of the land began in 1966 and the lake was then created in 1969. Formed when the Stone River was dammed, Percy Priest Lake covers an area of 14,400 square acres with 265 miles of shoreline. The lake serves as the quality water source to the area, and also provides several opportunities for recreation such as camping, fishing, swimming, boating, skiing, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, and much more.
